Following official recognition granted by the Gujarat government to the Indian Diamond Institute as the anchor institute for India’s gem and jewelry sector, the latter is currently launching a plan to provide a pool of technically skilled artisans for the manufacturing of intricate Indian jewelry in the next two years.
The Indian Diamond Institute is now working on new courses focusing on jewelry manufacturing and design in order to encourage new blood to enter the field of jewelry manufacturing.
The Times of India quotes Indian Diamond Institute’s Executive Director KK Sharma, who stated: "Our aim is to create a pool of technically trained manpower in Surat and key centers like Ahmedabad. We are working on the new courses that would give a major boost to the jewelry industry hunting for the skilled talents."
Sharma added that the Indian jewelry industry is suffering from a severe shortage of technically trained manpower. Jewelry exports from India have reportedly been increasing on a year-on-year basis, but India's share in the $146 billion global jewelry market is less than 5%.
The jewelry park currently being constructed in Ichhapore is likely to create over one lakh jobs in the jewelry manufacturing sector. The state government’s recognition of the Indian Diamond Institute as the anchor institute is expected to create a major boost in providing skilled manpower.
