Diamond Fluorescence to Influence GIA's Diamond Grading

JCK Online reports that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is to include grading of diamond fluorescence (None, Faint, Medium, Strong, and Very Strong) in Diamond Grading Reports and Diamond Dossiers. So far diamond fluorescence appeared in the report as a sideline and was not included in the grading.
JCK Online notes that this new inclusion should bring diamond fluorescence into public awareness. Each diamond will come with a color chart that describes the phenomena of diamond fluorescence in simple terms. Consumers will be able to view images of diamonds laminated by natural and UV light.
GIA's senior vice president of Laboratory of Research, Thomas Moses, explains "Some diamonds show fluorescence and some don’t. Fluorescence is the emission of visible light by a diamond when it is stimulated by invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is a common characteristic of diamonds. The diamond simply glows under the UV lights, usually a blue color, which most often stops when the energy source causing it is removed,” as quoted on JCK Online
