Following a damning report for the Marange diamond fields by the Kimberly Process Team, the army will have to evacuate the area, reports VOA News.
The report exposes a gruesome reality surrounding the diamond fields in Marange, with the army using violence to assert its control over diamond mining activities. The Kimberly Process Team also found evidence of illegal diamond exports. The investigation was instigated in response to allegations by a Human Rights Watch team that the Zimbabwean military terrorizes civilians living in and around the diamond field, killing 200 people and forcing others to mine for diamonds in dangerous conditions. Arguments by the army that it is there to protect the diamond mining fields tend to be dismissed, VOA News reports.
Obert Mpofu, Zimbabwe's Minister of Mines, revealed that the government is in the process of transferring management of the diamond fields in Marange, near Zimbabwe's border with Mozambique, to a private company.
