Despite the many discounts on seasonal merchandise and apparel, US shoppers were still reluctant to part with their cash in June. Unseasonal weather throughout the US last month also impacted on spending. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), retail industry sales for June slid by 3.8% unadjusted over last year and decreased by 0.2% seasonally adjusted month-to-month.
According to the U.S. Commerce Department, June retail sales indicate that total retail sales increased by 0.6% seasonally adjusted from the previous month and decreased by 7.8% unadjusted year-over-year.
Rosalind Wells, Chief Economist of NRF, noted: “Although several economic indicators are starting to show signs of improvement, it is going to take a few more months - maybe longer - for people to feel comfortable spending again. High unemployment and other uncertainties will continue to impact consumer spending through the remainder of this quarter.”
While some retailers saw small increases in month-to-month sales, many still reported declines year-over-year.
