Abstract Performance of diamond bit is determined by the performance of matrix material which wraps diamond grits to a large extent. In order to obtain electroplated diamond bit with high quality, theoretical research on electroplating technologies for matrix material, including bath composition and electroplating conditions, is particularly important. After changing the concentration of main sulphate, the usage of ammonium chloride, the bath temperature and the pH value, linear scanning polarization curves of plating bath, cyclic voltammetric curves as well as single potential step current- time transient curves were measured by microcomputer aided electrochemical analysis system. Besides, the effect of the former four factors on cathodic reduction process, initial behavior of electrocrystallization of ammonium salt nickel-based deposit and the nucleation mechanism were also analyzed, which provide the theoretical bases for the manufacture of nickel-based electroplated diamond bit with ammonium salt.
