In contravention of a direct recommendation by the Kimberly Process Team to withdraw military forces from diamond fields in Chiadzwa by next week, Zimbabwean government is planning to dispatch the military to the diamond fields again. This could mean an international ban on Zimbabwe diamonds, reports Daily Nation.
Zimbabwe's media reported that Operation Hakudzokwi re-launched to further fight the blood diamond industry and do away with illegal diamond dealers. Cde Chris Mushowe, governor of Manicaland province reportedly warned illegal diamond smugglers that they have no one to blame but themselves, Daily Nation reports.
Operation Hakudzokwi began back in August of last year and drew the attention of human right groups who alleged atrocities and mass killings. The Kimberly Process Team confirmed these allegations, stating soldiers were steeling diamonds and enslaving civilians. The full report is to be published at the end of this month.
Mr. Eldred Masunungure, a political scientist from the University of Zimbabwe, said that influential entities are not likely to allow the military to leave the diamond fields due to personal interests. Estimates are that Chiadzwa diamonds can generate up to US$200 million monthly. This is definitely strong motivation for the government, reports Daily Nation.
