India’s Union Ministry of Labor and Employment is currently carrying out a detailed survey of the diamond industry to assess its level of recovery. A delegation from the ministry visited diamond units in Surat which have claimed to be recovering from recession.
The delegation visited various diamond units and met with members of the Surat Diamond Association.
A state labor department official stated: "The main aim behind the survey is to get a clear view of the diamond industry after the recession. The ministry wants to find out the number of defunct diamond units which have resumed operation." The delegation also gathered data regarding the number of unemployed workers who have been reemployed.
According to the Times of India, Surat Diamond Association President CP Vanani was somewhat skeptical about the reasons for the visit: "We've provided information about the diamond industry to the Center, but don't know the real motive behind the survey."
The Labor Ministry claims to be involved in efforts to boost the diamond industry of Gujarat toward rapid recovery. The State Labor department stated that it had recently written to the state government, asking for its guidance for the renewal of registration of diamond units.
