Abstract The impregnated diamond tools matrix(metal bond) characteristics and diamond complementarily determine the tools processing efficiency and service life. In this paper, the concept of five major characteristics of matrix is proposed, which are wear resistance, retention, sinterability, formability and weldability. And their technology definition, evaluation methods and some studies are put forward.
