A college in Zimbabwe that teaches its students to cut and polish diamonds will now also begin to train them to process the stones for the purposes of making diamond jewelry, Newsday reports. The addition of the new curriculum comes as a foreign businessman makes a substantial cash donation to the school.
The Zimbabwe Diamond Education College, or ZDEC, will begin to process polished diamonds for mounting in pieces of jewelry once new equipment arrives from the school's newest benefactor, Daniel Samuel of Monaco Jewelers. The South African investor will be donating $2.5 million worth of equipment.
ZDEC administration executive Stephen Muchenje stated that the diamond processing activities which will be carried out under the auspices of the school will not be for commercial purposes, according to Newsday.
ZDEC, located in Mount Hapden, Zimbabwe, is owned by Core Mining chairman Lovemore Kurotwi and has been in existence since 2010.
