Mexican mining production in June was 4.1% higher than in the same month last year, boosted by gains in silver, gold, lead and zinc, while copper was nearly flat and the output of coal and iron fell, the National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said Friday.
Silver production in June rose 29% versus June 2011 to 406,987 kilograms, Inegi said. Mexico is the world's largest producer of silver.
June's gold output was 14% higher at 8,219 kilograms, and lead production grew 18% to 16,180 metric tons. Zinc output rose 9.3% to 42,694 tons, the statistics agency said.
Production of copper edged higher by 0.6% to 36,895 tons, while coal output slipped 3.2% to 1.12 million tons, Inegi said. June's output of iron slid 27% to 518,360 tons. In seasonally adjusted terms, June mining output rose 0.8% compared with May.
In the first six months of the year, mining production grew 4.2% compared with the same period last year, with gains in silver, gold, lead, copper and zinc, Inegi said. Output of iron and coal fell in the January-to-June period compared with last year.
