Zimbabwe has exported $456 million worth of diamonds so far this year, according to a government official.
Rough&Polished reported that despite the impressive number, the Treasury has received just $41 million from the proceeds.
Finance Minister Tendai Biti told NewZimbabwe.com that he was disappointed the government had yet to obtain the funds from the sales.
Of the major players in the country, Mbada Diamond sold diamonds worth $200 million while Anjin Investments exported $125 million worth of diamonds. None of the moneys generated by these companies have yet to reach the government, the finance minister said.
Biti urged the Mines Ministry to enforce greater transparency so that the treasury could get its fair share of funds.
“We are pleading with the Mines and Mining Development Minister, Obert Mpofu, to give us the diamond money so that we can be able to pay our struggling government workers,” he said.
