September was not a good month for Indian polished diamond exporters, who moved only $1.507 billion worth of the goods the entire month, Diamond World reported. That figure represented a 39% drop from September 2011.
Polished diamond imports dove by an even greater factor last month. Importers brought in $371 million worth of the gems in September, the equivalent of a 72% drop, year-over-year. Between polished imports and exports, the country's net polished exports remained constant at $1.136 billion.
India's export of rough diamonds, on the other hand, remained almost constant, falling only 1% to $157.8 million worth for the month, according to Diamond World. Its import of rough diamonds increased by 44% to $1.349 billion, producing a net rough diamond import figure $1.191 billion - a 51% increase.
Taking into account imports and exports of both rough and polished stones, India's net diamond account for the month stood at $55 million.
