Diamond company Petra announced that its mining operations in the East African country of Tanzania will produce increasing amounts of diamonds in the years to come, All Africa reports. The announcement comes on the heels of a second failed strike by Petra employees in South Africa.
As it rebuilt its plant at the Williamson diamond mine and did major reshaping work on its pit, Petra also introduced a re-crush system, further boosting alluvial production levels. With the re-start of production, Petra stated that it believes total production at the diamond mine will increase to 2.5 metric tons annually in 2013 and continue to rise, reaching 3.6 metric tons annually by 2016, according to All Africa.
Last week Petra employees in South Africa ended their second strike for increased wages in a month, again returning to work without having secured any promises from Petra to improve their salaries. Dozens of South African miners have been killed in recent months in strike actions.
