Two vastly different report have been issued by official organs of the Republic of Botswana, creating some confusion surrounding its actual levels of diamond industry production, Rough and Polished reports. Botswana's Central Statistics Office contends that in the month of August the country's diamond exports increased, year-over-year, yet the Bank of Botswana maintains that diamond exports decreased significantly during this same time period.
The Central Statistics Office claims that $594 million worth of diamonds were exported from the country in August, 12% more than the $531 million worth which were exported in August 2011. But the Bank of Botswana stated that the country's diamond exports only amounted to $95.9 million in August 2012, a 81.9% decrease from a year previous.
The two bodies were also at odds over their numbers for July 2012. The CSO said that $181 million worth of diamonds were exported in July, meaning that the country's figure from August signified an increase of over 100%. The BOB said that exports actually dropped by 63.2% between July and August 2012, Rough and Polished reported.
