What you need to know about natural stone

Post Date: 08 Aug 2009    Viewed: 718

With so many countertop choices, it is no wonder so many people get confused and frustrated with their countertop search. Natural stone has been and still is the most popular choice for many reasons. One reason is that no two pieces of natural stone are identical; every piece is essentially an antique made over hundreds/thousands and even millions of years to natural perfection. Also, natural stone countertops have unmatched colors and patterns. To sum it up, there are many different categories of stone and all have their own unique characteristics.

Granite countertops are by far the most popular and readily available type of natural stone countertops. There are over 450 names/granite styles available from all over the world, at various price points. Granite is made of mostly quartz which is the next hardest stone to diamond, therefore it is known to be very scratch resistant. Many warn that cutting on your granite countertops will dull your knives therefore it is best to use a cutting board. This fact combined with its factory polished surface that closes the natural pours makes it an ideal stone for the kitchen.

Maintenance: Typically the countertops will be sealed with a penetrating sealant prior to installation which should last the life of the stone. Since countertops are one of the hardest working surfaces in your home as far as use and clean up, it is suggested that you re-seal about every 2 years for piece of mind.

Marble is a classic stone that has been used in homes through the world for thousands of years. Marble typically comes from Italy and possesses some of the most replicated but never duplicated natural colors and patterns. Marble is also durable but is softer and more porous than granite which will require more maintenance to keep it looking like new. Marble can also be damaged by acidic foods and drinks such as citrus fruit and wine. Many people use marble in their kitchens for baking tops because it stays cool when rolling out dough and making pastries (like a marble rolling pin).

Maintenance: Like granite, marble is typically sealed prior to installation but will need to be re-sealed about every year to prevent staining. Since marble is softer than granite the scratches may need to be buffed out yearly if you are looking for pristine tops.

Slate is a natural stone that can be found as bathroom vanity tops more often than in the kitchen. The reason for this is that it breaks or shales off into smaller pieces easily so it is rarely found in the form of a large enough slab for a kitchen. With its unique variety of bold and soft colors it can truly become the focal point of the space. Also, the rustic qualities of slate lend it to be used in a more casual setting but don’t be afraid to design out of the box.

Maintenance: Slate will require sealing about once every 2 years. Initially upon installation it may continue to shale or shed small pieces, which is typical.

Sandstone is a stone that looks as you could expect, like sand. It typically is found in brown shades with some red and yellow tones. It has a soft serene movement to it and often has a matte finish. Sandstone is not found in kitchens often, like slate it rarely leaves the quarry in a large enough slap for an entire kitchen. This material is also soft and can be scratched fairly easily.

Maintenance: Sandstone will require sealing at least once per year

Soapstone is a rich and beautiful natural stone used for countertops. Typically seen with a matte finish, this stone is found in black, dark grey, dark green and dark blue tones with white or gray veining. Soapstone is a naturally antibacterial material which made it great for science lab table tops (remember your high school science lab). Now a popular choice for the kitchen. This material is softer than granite so it will take some maintenance to keep it looking like new.

Maintenance: Should be wiped with mineral oil once a day for about 1-2 months to get a uniform look, after that, oiling it about once per month should maintain it. Deep scratches can be sanded out with fine sand paper.

Many decisions are made solely upon the appearance of the stone but it is very important to do your research and talk to a stone professional. Make sure you ask about daily and long term maintenance. Also ask about how your stone should be cleaned on a daily basis and any potential pit falls.
