An Israeli diamond technology firm says one of its products is capable of objectively determining the qualities of a diamond, at issue in a major lawsuit currently working its way through a U.S. court. Kfar Saba-based Sarin Technologies says that its Sarin Light system can reliably measure the overall amount of light reflected by a polished diamond, and that this information could settle a claim of false advertising being brought before a federal judge in Ohio.
After the Zale Corporation advertised that its Celebration Fire diamonds are the "most brilliant diamonds in the world", rival Sterling Jewelers, a subsidiary of retail chain Signet Jewelers, sued Zale, claiming that this assertion is not a subjective one, and furthermore that it is false.
Sarin's chief executive officer Uzi Levami notes that the firm's Sarin Light system takes repeatable unambiguous measurements of a diamond's parameters, including its perceived brightness. The system, which is packaged in a compact size so as to be useful to diamond jewelry retail stores, could reliably determine if Zale's claims are legitimate, according to Levami.
