Zimbabwe's Diamond Runoff Sought In Mozambique

Diamond companies will soon be exploring the southeastern African nation of Mozambique for diamonds, Rough and Polished reports. Mozambique is not known for having underground diamond mines, but some suspect that diamonds may have literally trickled into the country with river runoff from Zimbabwe.
Botswana Diamonds announced that it signed a deal with Morminas, a local firm, to explore two of the latter's 100%-owned concessions on the Save River, which carries effluent from Zimbabwe's diamond-rich Marange region and drains it in the direction of the ocean, passing through Mozambique, which sits on the coast. The accord gives Botswana Diamonds six months in which it will have exclusive rights to any diamonds found in those parts. If their efforts prove fruitful, a long-term negotiation would likely follow.
Botswana has requested permission to mine in the Marange region itself, but it is still waiting for the Zimbabwean government to respond to its application, according to Rough and Polished.
