In view of the growth in the electric energy demand, the Executive Branch decided to diversify energy sources, mainly with the incorporation of renewable energy from native sources.
In the understanding that solar energy involves the exploitation of a renewable resource which is abundant in Uruguay, the Executive Branch has passed new regulations with the aim of having the costs of solar panels decline.
New regulations tend to encourage the execution of special contracts for the sale of electrical energy between the National Electrical Power Generation and Transmission Office ("UTE") and suppliers of electricity of solar photovoltaic source in the country, whose power installed is between 500 kW and 50 MW. The award of contracts for the sale of electricity will be made through a competitive process.
