India extended the range of diamonds that can be re-imported for certification without duty charges to include diamonds between sizes of 0.10 carats and 0.25 carats.
"Cut and polished diamonds of 0.10 carat or above can be exported and thereafter re-imported duty free after certification by authorized laboratories. Earlier this was allowed for diamonds of size 0.25-carat and above only,” Anup Pujari, the director of foreign trade wrote in a notification.
The amended law states that an exporter with annual export turnover of about $818 million (INR 50 million) for each of the past three years may export cut and polished diamonds of 0.10-carat and larger to authorized laboratories with re-import facilities at zero duty within three months of the date of export.
In January 2012, the government introduced a 2 percent import duty on polished diamonds.
