New Yorkers now have the opportunity to see a massive polished diamond up close since it went on public display last week Thursday, Live Science reports. The whopping 55-carat 3.2 centimeter champagne-colored virtually flawless Kimberley Diamond will be shown at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
The incredible stone was discovered about a century and a half ago, at some point before 1868 in South Africa's Kimberley Mine. Though the stone weighed 490 carats when it was unearthed, it was cut down to 70 carats back in 1921, and was furthered shaved down to its present state in 1958.
George Harlow, curator of the Bruce F. Stuart Trust that loaned the gem out to the museum, said that a stone of this size would likely not be recovered nowadays, because of modern mining techniques. The stone would likely be crushed down into smaller bits, according to Live Science.
