Dominion Diamond Corporation recovered approximately 1.04 million carats of diamonds from its Ekati and Diavik assets during the second quarter of 2013.
The company reported that production at Ekati, which Dominion acquired from BHP in April, reached about 400,000 carats between April 10 and June 30. Rapaport records indicate that Ekati production amounted to 413,000 carats in the equivalent period of 2012. The mine yielded 1 million tonnes of processed ore for an average grade of 0.41 carats per tonne. Dominion said it expects to mine 1 million carats from 3.9 million tonnes at Ekati by the end of the year.
Dominion also has a 40 percent stake in the Diavik mine, which is operated by 60 percent shareholder Rio Tinto. Diavik’s production fell 13 percent year on year to 1.6 million carats so that Dominion’s share amounted to about 640,000 carats. Rio Tinto and Dominion recently approved a plan for Diavik production of 7.3 million carats, up from its original plan of 6 million carats.
