The revenue from the July Sight conducted by diamond giant De Beers was approximately $600 million, Rough and Polished reports. The Sight came on the heels of a series of small-sized average price increases.
A diamond trader surveyed at the sight noted that although most of the boxes likely found buyers, it was not necessarily the usual suspects who did the purchasing. The trader, who chose to remain anonymous, said that some of the boxes were rejected, but then purchased by other diamond companies, with an eye to improving their own position in the market. The low level of excitement witnessed at the Sight was confirmed by De Beers head of beneficiation Nigel Simson, though he said that this was a function of the distribution system the diamond company employed, according to Rough and Polished.
