Finished steel production in Latin America of 28 million mt through the first half of 2013 was in line with the same period a year ago, regional steel association Alacero said Tuesday. Crude steel output fell 1% to 32.9 million mt, the group said.
Brazil was the largest producer of finished steel in the January-June period at 12.9 million mt, a 46% share of the Latin American total. It was followed by Mexico with 8 million mt for a 28% share.
Colombia and Chile showed production declines of 32% and 19%, respectively, compared to same period of 2012. Actual production figures for the two countries were not disclosed.
In June alone, Latin American finished steel production climbed 5% to 5 million mt from the same month last year, while crude steel production rose 3% year-on-year to 5.5 million mt.
