Peru's copper production posted a strong increase in July over a year ago while output from zinc and silver also increased, the government said Tuesday.
Copper production rose 13.68% to 124,961 tons in July from the same month last year, the Mines and Energy Ministry said. The increase was due to higher output from Glencore Xstrata PLC's (GLEN.LN) Tintaya unit, as well as from Compania Minera Antamina SA and Sociedad Minera El Brocal SAA (BROCALC1.VL).
The ministry said Peru's zinc production totaled 113,152 tons in July, up 4.81% compared to the same month last year. Silver production rose 1.9% to 306,506 kilograms.
Gold production fell 4.23% in July to 13,135 kilograms, while lead production was down 5.86% to 22,033 tons.
Peru's iron production decreased 6.77% to 575,144 tons, and tin production was slightly lower at 1,872 tons, the ministry said. Peru is a top global producer of base and precious metals.
