Search Minerals are hoping to continue their work in Labrador finding rare earth metals that are vital to modern technology.
Search Minerals has been doing work in the areas of Port Hope Simpson, St. Lewis, Mary’s Harbour, and Henley Harbour since 2010. Each year, they work through the summer and into the fall.
The rare earth metals that Search Minerals are looking for in the region, such as Dysprosium, Yttrium, and Neodymium, are used in TVs, computer screens, and smart phones. Rare earth magnets are used in wind turbines and hybrid cars.
This summer, in Labrador, the group mainly did exploration work.
"We did some boat work and we did lots of walking and basically collecting samples and doing work on the samples and looking for more prospects,” says Randy Miller, Search Minerals’,Vice President of Exploration.
Miller works along with three other geologists in the region. Each year, they also hire on locals from the area who help out with prospecting, administration, and with transportation via boat.
After drilling on the Foxtrot deposit about 10 km west of St. Lewis, and doing a preliminary economic assessment, the group is now looking to find another such deposit. Miller says there is also engineering and environmental studies taking place pertinent to the work happening in Labrador.
They concluded their work this year in August but are presently hoping to raise enough money this month to continue their work in the region in the fall.
