Japanese steel June scrap purchases total 2.23 million tonne

According to monthly statistics from the Japan ministry of economy, trade & industry, Japan's steel industry bought a total of 2,238,000 tonnes of locally available ferrous scrap in June 2013, up 2.0% from the same month of a year ago.
Of the total, carbon steel scrap accounted for 2,091,000 tonnes, up 2.2% from the same month of a year ago; alloy steel scrap 101,000 tons, down 0.8%; and pig iron scrap 46,000 tonnes, up 1.1%.
Of home arisings in June 2013, carbon steel scrap accounted for 765,000 tonnes, down 1.3% from the same month of a year ago; alloy steel scrap 128,000 tonnes, up 3.3%; and pig iron scrap 33,000 tonnes, up 5.0%.
The Japanese steel industry consumed a total of 3,195,000 tonnes of ferrous scrap for steelmaking in June 2013, down 0.6% from the same month of a year ago. In the breakdown by steelmaking furnace, LD converters consumed 795,000 tonnes of carbon steel scrap, up 3.3% from the same month of a year ago; 47,000 tonnes of alloy steel scrap, down 18.6%; and 24,000 tonnes of pig iron scrap, up 27.3%. Electric arc furnaces consumed 2,113,000 tonnes of carbon steel scrap, down 1.6% from the same month of a year ago; 171,000 tonnes of alloy steel scrap, down 4.2%; and 44,000 tons of pig iron scrap, up 3.8%.
