Global crude steel production capacity utilization rises in September

World crude steel production in September showed an increase of 6.1 percent year on year, reaching 132.54 million metric tons, while a two percent growth was observed on month-on-month basis, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).


In September this year, the average capacity utilization of steel mills across the globe was 79.3 percent, 2.1 percentage points higher compared to September 2012 and 3.4 percentage points higher compared to August of the current year.


In the meantime, total global crude steel production in the first nine months of the current year rose 2.7 percent compared to the same period of 2012, totaling 1.2 billion metric tons.


In September, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 88.32 million mt, up by 8.9 percent, with 65.4 million mt produced by China, up by 11 percent, 9.3 million mt produced by Japan, up 5.5 percent, and 5.2 million mt produced by South Korea, down by 8.7 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.


EU-27 countries produced 14.3 million mt of crude steel in September, up by a slight margin of 0.3 percent compared with September 2012. In September this year, Germany's output was 3.61 million mt, up 1.4 percent year on year, Italy's crude steel output was 2.13 million mt, down 10.4 percent year on year, and France's crude steel output was 1.4 million mt, up 7.4 percent year on year.


Turkey produced 3.01 million metric tons of crude steel in September this year, with a 1.2 percent decrease from the same month in 2012.


Iran's crude steel production in September this year amounted to 1.4 million mt, up 10.7 percent compared to September 2012.


The CIS registered a crude steel output of 8.77 million mt in September, down 5.4 percent year on year, with Russia producing 5.6 million mt, decreasing six percent compared to September 2012, and Ukraine producing 2.7 million mt, up 2.7 percent on year-on-year basis.


In North America in September, crude steel output totaled 9.9 million mt, up 3.3 percent year on year, with the US producing 7.24 million mt and Mexico producing 1.62 million mt, up 6.3 percent and 4.5 percent respectively on year-on-year basis.


Meanwhile, crude steel output in South America in September amounted to 4.07 million mt, up by 6.6 percent year on year, with Brazil's output totaling 3.03 million mt, up 5.7 percent year on year.
