The Israel Diamond Exchange hosted a viewing of large rough diamonds, courtesy of mining giant Rio Tinto. The Ramat Gan complex's Alon Hall, which was renovated especially for the viewing, played host to stones over 10 carats in size from Rio's remaining diamond mines: the Argyle mine in Australia, the Diavik mine in Canada and the Murowa mine in Zimbabwe. Potential purchasers also had the opportunity to take closer looks at the rough diamonds in private viewing rooms.
The most outstanding diamond that Rio brought to Israel was a whopping 74-carat gem mined at its Murowa facility.
The week-long viewing follows a period of similar duration in which the precious gems were on display in Belgium. Rio Tinto Sales General Manager Patrick Coppens noted that with the significant interest expressed by Israeli diamond traders, it was only logical to bring the stones to the IDE. Bourse president Shmuel Schnitzer acknowledged Rio's decision to bring its stones to these shores and vowed to continue hosting tenders by major diamond companies.
