Sandvik Coromant’s CoroMill 171 and 172 disc cutters are designed to cut gears, splines and racks, enabling gear profile manufacturing on most types of CNC machines. Components can be processed in flexible, non-dedicated machines such as multitasking and hobbing machines as well as machining centers. According to the company, one cutter body can be used for different insert types on the same machine, reducing setup times and downtime.

The versatile disc cutters are said to be cost-effective for small to medium batches of internal and external gears and splines as well as racks and pinions. They can be used to generate straight-flank or involute profiles. To increase flexibility, they are designed to hold a range of inserts to produce gears and splines that are close in module size and feature similar tool profiles.

The CoroMill 172 model features the company’s iLock interface along with indexable carbide insert technology. Ground carbide inserts enable dry machining. Both models are available in a range of modules with gear profiles in accordance with DIN 867 for gears and DIN 5480 for splines. Diameters range from 1.5" to 3" (39 to 70 mm) for the CoroMill 171 and 2.5" to 10" (63 to 254 mm) for the CoroMill 172.
