Japan’s Toshiba is to provide the battery for the UK’s first 2 MW Energy Storage System, set to be located in the West Midlands area of Wolverhampton.
The battery will be installed in a primary substation in September and will be connected to an 11kV grid. The project itself is due to begin in November and will allow testing at what the company says are ‘realistic’ levels in order to ascertain the technical and economical potential of Energy Storage Systems within the grid.
The installation is part of Toshiba’s ongoing commitment to promote such systems around the world as a support for stale power networks. Already, the firm has supplied several projects within Japan and has received orders for commercial systems both from home and from Italy.
