The Current Condition of the Japanese Machine Tool Industry

The total value of machine tool orders in June was 127.64 billion yen. This was an increase of 5.9% compared to June and marked the first month-on-month growth in three months. In addition, this figure represented an increase of 34.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, with June posting the ninth consecutive month of year-on-year growth. The total amount of orders has now topped 100 billion yen for ten consecutive months and has also passed 120 billion yen for four consecutive months.
Both domestic and foreign demands are expected to be driven by a recovery trend in the future. However, we will keep a close watch on the trend of spot orders of electrical and precision machinery from China.
Domestic orders rose by 16.2% over May, amounting to 42.66 billion yen. This marked the second consecutive month of month-on-month increase. This figure was also an increase of 33.1% over the same month of the previous year and marked the twelfth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
Looking at major industries, orders compared to May rose by 20.5% in industrial machinery, by 15.4% in motor vehicles, by 7.4% in electrical and precision machinery, and by 49.4% in aircraft, shipbuilding and transport equipment.
Foreign orders rose by 1.4% over May to 84.98 billion yen. This marked the first month-on-month increase in three months. At the same time, foreign orders showed an increase of 34.6% from the same month of the previous year, with June posting the eighth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
By region, orders from Asia fell by 3.8% from May to 42.72 billion yen. This was an increase of 70.9% from the same month of the previous year. Orders from Europe fell by 2.3% from May to 16.17 billion yen. This was an increase of 26.7% over the same month of the previous year. Orders from North America rose by 12.6% over May, amounting to 23.35 billion yen. However, this was a decrease of 1.8% from the same month of the previous year.
