The Zimbabwean reports that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe announced on Tuesday that the government has selected two investors to take over the Chiyadzwa Diamond Fields. The President made the announcement during the Second Session of the Seventh Parliament of Zimbabwe, and stated that this move will help develop the Chiyadzwa diamond fields.
Mugabe stated that the Zimbabwean diamond industry has been searching for investments, and as of now, two investors have been selected. The identity of the investors is currently unknown. Mugabe added that the deal with the investors will ensure that local families are relocated in an orderly fashion to make way for full-scale commercial diamond mining in the Chiyadzwa Diamond Fields.
Mugabe added that the Mines and Minerals Amendment proposal, which will be discussed at the current session, will tighten the relationship between the government and diamond miners. The amendments are intended to regulate the rights of diamond miners according to the Indigenization and Economic Empowerment policy, as well as encourage direct foreign investments and the exploration of new diamond deposits.
