The construction beginning of the zero energy office building in Gijon, (Spain) marks an important milestone in the project. From its origins, it will be materialized the bioclimatic design criteria established by applying passive strategies and integrating energy-efficient equipment and control systems that reduce substantially the energy demand of the building. This demand will be covered through renewable energies generated by several sources, such as Onyx Solar´s photovoltaic glass. The energy requirements will be even further reduced to achieve zero energy consumption becoming a reference building worldwide.
Onyx Solar will contribute to this project through the design and integration of photovoltaic constructive solutions that will generate over 33,500 kWh of energy per year. In addition to the energy inputs, Onyx Solar's photovoltaic building materials will help to significantly improve passive properties associated with the building envelope, such as thermal insulation, natural illumination or shading improvements, key goals for the autonomy and efficiency project objectives.
Moreover, the sum of all the measures will make this office building, which completion is planned for 2015, getting a LEED Platinum certification, strengthening the evidence of the commitment in terms of sustainability, energy efficiency and clean energy utilization.
