OnyxSolar manufactured a 600-square-meter photovoltaic canopy to connect two buildings on the Mohamed VI Polytechnic University campus in Morocco. In an environment where high temperature and solar radiation is prevalent, the canopy provides refreshing shades. The innovative 21st century canopy also was developed to pay tribute to traditional latticework, a common way to create shades in Arabic construction, according to OnyxSolar.
The project is composed of large format glasses, custom designed to meet specific requirements from the client. One panel, with 144 photovoltaic cells, has the capacity to produce a peak power of 626 watt pounds, or 16 percent efficiency.
Designed by architects Ricardo Bofill and Elie Mouyal, the solar panel canopy is Onyx Solar' first project in Morocco, and is included in the development plan of “Villa Verte (Green Cities)” of the Moroccan State-owned group OPC, the first global phosphorus exporter.
