Enid Gem and Mineral Society is looking for people interested in mineral and rock collecting, as well as jewelry making and lapidary hobbies.
The organization has several events planned this year, with the annual rock swap planned for June and the “Treasure Showcase” in November. Field trips are planned to find gems and minerals, and trips are set to other shows and swaps across Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas.
The society was organized in 1958 as Enid Rockhounds’ Society, and in June 1962, the name was changed to Enid Gem and Mineral Society. It is a member of Oklahoma State Council of Mineralogical Societies, Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies and an affiliate of American Federation of Mineralogical Societies. Memberships and affiliations give members exposure to national opportunities for greater education and advancement of their individual interests. A monthly meeting is held at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Hoover Building, 315 E. Oxford. Scholarships are awarded to college students majoring in earth sciences.
The society will hold monthly raffles of jewelry and other item. January’s raffle is for a sterling silver pendant and earring set with Mediterranean coral. Raffle tickets are $1 each or seven tickets for $5. They are available at Johnson Jewelry and Rock Shop, 216 W. Randolph, or from any club member. For information about Enid Gem and Mineral Society or the raffle, call (580) 237-1177.
