Law enforcement officials have identified both the shooter and the victims in Thursday's deadly shooting at ProTec, a Sioux Steel location in Lennox.
According to Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson, the suspected shooter in the incident is 52-year-old Jeffrey Dezeeuw of Sioux Falls.
Dezeeuw allegedly entered Sioux Steel around 9:30 a.m. Thursday and got into an argument with John Richter, 45, of Lennox. Lennox Police Chief Orville Jorgenson says Dezeeuw was attached to Sioux Steel, though he was not sure if he was an employee of the company, or if he worked as a contractor.
After the argument, Dezeeuw left the building, then came back in shortly afterwards. Johnson says that's when Dezeeuw opened fire, shooting and killing Richter.
Dezeeuw then allegedly shot Kathy Steever, 46 of Lennox, in the head. Steever was hospitalized for her injuries. She was originally in critical condition, but Johnson said on Friday that her condition has improved.
The third victim, Brian Roesler, 45, of Marion, was in a different part of the building at the time of the fight. When he heard shots, he went to see what was going on. When he found Dezeeuw, the two became engaged in a physical altercation.
Roesler was hospitalized as a result of that fight, but has since been released. Johnson says Dezeeuw left the scene after the fight.
All three victims were employees of Sioux Steel. Johnson says Roesler's actions may have saved the lives of others at the scene.
Johnson says Dezeeuw drove south of Lennox a few miles in a truck. At this point, investigators believe Dezeeuw lit the truck on fire before shooting himself.
Some employees at Sioux Steel back at work today, though the area where the shooting happened was blocked off.
