Even after one month of the first lot of undisclosed synthetic diamonds being detected, Surat Diamond Association (SDA) and Natural Diamond Monitoring Committee (NDMC) are yet to take action against those involved in the case.
Last week, NDMC had issued a notice asking the trader Chandu Sheta to put his case before the committee within seven days. On Tuesday, SDA also issued a show cause notice to Sheta.
On February 21, the diamond traders operating in Mini Bazaar market in Varachha identified as Krunal Borad and Gaurang Kanani had brought the parcel containing 110 pieces of polished diamonds at the SDA office for testing after they suspected some foul play in the deal. The diamonds were sold to the traders by Sheta who had purchased them from the Bhavnagar diamond market. In preliminary tests it was found that almost all the 110 pieces of diamonds were synthetic in nature. The testing at Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) also confirmed that the diamonds were synthetics.
The detection of undisclosed synthetic diamonds has rocked the diamond industry in India as well as abroad.
SDA president Dinesh Navadia said, "We are committed to take action against the traders who knowingly or unknowingly sold synthetic diamonds. But according to the law we have to give a fair chance to the accused to put his version."
