More layoffs may be coming for Lone Star Tubular Operations north of Longview.
A spokeswoman for U.S. Steel said Monday the company issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications on Thursday for receipt Friday.
“In the case of Lone Star, an additional 579 employees are covered by WARN Notices,” said Courtney Boone.
The notification does not mean the employees will be laid off, but that they may.
According to the letter sent out to employees, layoffs will begin June 17 and continue through July 24.
“This action is a result of a decline in tubular market conditions, which is impacting the plant’s products,” the company said in the letter.
In January, the company, which employed about 1,110 at its East Texas facility, announced plans to “adjust operations” there, indicating about 320 employees were facing layoffs by the end of February.
Since the beginning of the year, U.S. Steel has idled several tubular plants and adjusted operations at Lone Star and one other plant as oilfield demand for the tubing it produces has fallen. In mid-February, it said it also was laying off 63 people from tubular operations in Hughes Springs.
