Tiles have long been used for decorative accents, flooring, wall coverings and countertops in home designs. Incorporating mosaic tiles into spaces where traditional tiles would be used can add a new spin.
While mosaic tiles may be something people envision in tropical or international spaces, today they are exploding on the market closer to home. New color offerings and styles are available, and many homeowners are turning to mosaics for aesthetic appeal.
Imagine recreating the hues of an undulating ocean in a serene master bath. What about the punch of color of a Caribbean sunset? Pairing different colored mosaic tiles together can recreate the ambiance of nature, artwork - whatever can be imagined.
Consider adding punch to a backsplash in the kitchen for a conversation piece while entertaining. Choose a mosaic sink in a bathroom for a special appeal. Mosaic designs can also adorn a single accent wall in a hall or entryway, or create a design in the foyer floor.
Mosaics can also be used outdoors. Add them to the risers of entryway staircases. Or, why not line the inside of a birdbath with mosaic tiles to create a work of art? When closing the swimming pool for the season, drain the water and add a mosaic pattern to the floor or wall for design appeal next year.
Unless the homeowner is an artist with an intrinsic feel for design, it may be better to leave mosaic designs to a professional tile installer. He or she can suggest designs and work through the often difficult installation process. While mosaic tiles may take a little more time and financial investment, the end result could be well worth it.
