Five U.S. steel producers today filed trade complaints over steel imports from China and seven other countries, alleging they were injured by unfairly priced imports that were, in some cases, government-subsidized.
The trade cases were filed by U.S. Steel, AK Steel, Nucor, Steel Dynamics and Arcelor Mittal. They are asking that tariffs of up to 320 percent be imposed on imports of certain types of steel from those countries.
The complaints center on cold-rolled steel used in appliances, the automotive industry, construction and other markets. Imports of cold-rolled steel from the eight countries increased 120 percent between 2012 and 2014, the steelmakers said. More than $1.2 billion of the imports hit U.S. shores last year, they said.
In addition to China, the complaints target Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, Russia and the United Kingdom. The steelmakers allege that imports from Brazil, China, India, South Korea and Russia were government-subsidized.
The complaints were filed with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission.
