Phantoms knock Steel into second place

Five Youngstown Phantoms scored goals in Saturday’s road 5-1 victory over the Chicago Steel.
Austin Pooley, Max Ellis, Nicolas Werbik, Michael Karow and Alex Esposito scored goals.
Eric Esposito assisted on two goals while Karow, Pooley, Alex Esposito, Alec Mahalak and Marshall Moise each had one.
Ivan Kulkakov made 23 saves and had a shutout until Jack Badini scored with 4:37 remaining.
Karow set up Pooley for the only goal of the first period.
With 16:19 remaining in the second period, Ellis scored on a feed from Moise.
The Phantoms then scored twice in a span of 1:23. First, Werbik scored with Alex Esposito and Mahalak getting assists.
Karow then put the puck past Steel goaltender Ales Stezka, who replaced Peter Thome after Werbik’s goal. Pooley and Eric Esposito had assists.
The Steel loss allowed the Dubuque Fighting Saints (26-10-4, 56 points) to take over first place in the Eastern Conference. The Steel (25-9-4, 54 points) fell to second place, but have two games in hand on the Fighting Saints.
The Phantoms (22-13-5, 49 points) remain in fourth place, two points behind the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
