Dallas, Texas was the venue for a special fundraising event called “Dallas Rocks” for the Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.), a nonprofit international organization whose mission is to raise money to support educational initiatives that develop and empower disadvantaged people in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource.
The D.E.F. honored former President Bush's daughters, Barbara and Jenna, NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo and Maril Auger. According to reports, the fundraiser did indeed rock, raising around 500k for disadvantaged African children. Russell Simmons called Jenna and Barbara Bush "true inspirations."
Ellen Haddigan, Executive Director of D.E.F, stated: "Dallas Rocks was a great night for everyone in the room and a great night for Africa. From our incredible honorees, to the performance by Smokey Robinson, to Rev Run's birthday celebration at the after party, it was one incredible moment after the next. The movement for diamond empowerment through education for Africa keeps growing and Dallas was a big step forward for the cause."
