According to Mining Weekly, a recent survey published by the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) found that approximately 25% of Canadians are in favor of diamond mining, while 15% oppose it.
As a whole, it would seem that Canadians have a good grasp on the different facets of the diamond mining industry and its importance to Canada’s general economy; over 96% of survey respondents said that mining is either ‘important’ or ‘very important.’ Two out of three respondents support the sharing of tax revenue from diamond mining with First Nations people.
This survey comes in the wake of a decision by the government to prohibit diamond mining and exploration in Northern Ontario land. Other survey findings indicated that a mere 4% of respondents considered mining to be ‘not important’ to Canada, while approximately one in seven Canadians is said to have a personal connection to the diamond mining sector.
It is interesting to note that certain demographic groups, namely; men, residents of rural areas and university educated citizens, tend to lean more towards feeling a personal connection to mining.
