The Copenhagen Climate Change Conference 2009 enters into high-level phase since Chinese Premier Wen off to Oslo. Though decisive agreement is still in hot discussion, one thing is completely clear—nations of the globe fighting together against climate change.
China, the world's largest developing country, has taken unprecedented efforts to carbon reduction and environment protection, despite its tremendous need for development. Statement of government claims to do more in the 11th five-year plan, and realize “ecological civilization” at an earliest date.
Stone is one kind of pillar industry for modern progress, thus bearing comparatively heavier social responsibility. Though the whole production process involves no kiln calcinations, negative effects do exist in terms of waste, pollution, etc. First, traditional methods of mining and processing impose massive destruction and pollution on environment. Although modern technology and equipment have already been applied in most enterprises, some backward is still in operation. Stone industry is seriously resource-dependent, but natural resource is limited and impossible to reborn, so the second challenge is, how to make best use of each bit. But from mine exploring to block shaping, we see insufficient utilization and massive waste without recycling. And the third is, how to innovate "stone" –a form of substance, to a part of daily life, in respect to sustainable development, value realization, and most important is, better utilization of such limited resource.
As a response to Copenhagen Talks, China Stone Material Industry Association will take the initiative to regulate industrial revolution concerning climate change and environment protection, in the coming-up Sixth Membership Conference. Details on stone industry upgrading and structure adjustment will be exposed on STONETECH 2010 International Summit.
