Abstract In this paper, the effect of A1 content in the starting mixture on the reaction mechanism and mechanical performance of CBN-based compact sintered at 5.0 GPa and 1 400oCwas studied.Based on the hardness test, microstructure and phase composition analysis,it was found that the reaction between CBN and A1,as well as the mechanical performance of CBN-based compacts, strongly depended on the A1 content of.The starting mixtures. In addition,we calculated the lattice constants of A1N accurately to analyse the fate of B as one of the reaction products of CBN and A1 for the first time.Experimental results showed that when the A1 content of raw materials was no more than 1 5ï¼…,all the samples had a homogeneous microstructure and the Vickers hardness of the specimens could be always above 30 GPa.The CBN conposites with 1 5ï¼…A1 showed the best cutting performance.
