The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has recently identified and pulled a counterfeit diamond grading report which surfaced in Hong Kong, National Jeweler reported.
According to a GIA statement, the bogus report was traced back to the diamond trading center of Antwerp, Belgium. The GIA lab was able to determine that the report's docket number did not match the gem it accompanied, but rather another, higher-quality stone.
The Gemological Institute of America said that a diamond of lower quality apparently cut to match the original GIA report but the diamond's measurements, color and clarity failed to match the specifications of the diamond that actually went with the original report. Furthermore, a closer examination of the fake report revealed that its physical characteristics did not match the format used in authentic GIA certificates.
The GIA is reportedly conducting a covert investigation as to the report and its origin, and iד collaborating with law enforcement authorities worldwide to help prevent, detect and prosecute such illegal activities.
