Abstract Taking iron powder as the alternative of tungsten carbide in matrix composition,a new type of hot pressed iron-based bit matrix was studied in respect of its hardness and wear resistance.Regression models of matrix composition on matrix hardness and wear resistance were obtained respectively in addition to an optimized matrix formula through regression analyses on experimental results and constrained nonlinear programming. The results of nonlinear programming revealed that the predictive optimum value of hardness was 139.5 HRB and the optimum wear resistance was 0.056 g,whereas they could not reach the optimum value at the same time.Finally,twoΦ41/27 mm common diamond bits were designed and then manufactured based on the two optimum matrix formulae to perform drilling tests in granite with drillability of grade 9.The average penetration rate of the two diamond bits was 2.04 m/h.
