Abstract Extreme vertices method was employed to design diamond bit matrix formulation experiments in order to systematically study the effect law of matrix composition on matrix mechanical performances. The ingredients of the matrix formula are Fe(including 23%P),WC,663-Cu,Ni,Co and Mn powder. The hardness and wear resistance of matrix were set to be the main testing indexes.Regression analysis and nonlinear programming were carried out subsequently on testing results to analyze the influence rule of matrix compositions on matrix mechanical properties.Optimal hardness and wear resistance of the matrix and their corresponding formulas were obtained.Analysis results indicated that phosphorus could reduce the sintering temperature to some extent and prevent the thermal erosion of iron to diamond particles effectively. With the increment of Fe(P-Fe in fact)and WC powders, the hardness and wear resistance of matrix were both improved obviously, which proved that iron-based matrix could satisfy the requirements of hot-pressed diamond bit for mechanical properties.
