Effect of grain size of CBN and assembly mode on characteristics of PCBN

Abstract: This paper focused on the effect of the grain size of CBN and assembly mode on the characteristics of PCBN under HPHT. Experiment results showed that CBN grain size had a great impact on PCBN performance. Mixed grain size was better than single size; wide-ranged mixed grain size was better than narrow-ranged mixed size. When Dmax/Dmax approached 1, the abrasion ratio and hardness of PCBN became lower. With the assembly method of double-salt double-carbon tube, the sintering temperature can be controlled conveniently, and the pressure distribution became much more uniform. Meanwhile, the homogeneity of PCBN can be assured.
