Abstract: During the grinding of Al2O3 engineering ceramics, new porous metal-bonded diamond grinding wheels were tracking observed by using three-dimensional video microscope. The main wear forms of diamond grits and characteristics of the wheel surface were analyzed. The experiment results indicated that the wear forms of diamond grits of the porous diamond grinding wheels during grinding included flatting, fracture and pull-out, among which flatting was predominant. Moreover, as metal bond was continuously worn out, the diamond grits buried in the metal bond protruded to replace the worn and pulled out diamond grits. Besides, porous structure of the surface e of the new wheel kept on changing alternately during the grinding process, thus the wheel kept self–sharpening.
